Felina, Director and compare of the now famous Las Intrepidas Vela – is one of the movers and shakers of the muxhes in Juchitan – where she goes – others follow. She is fondly described as the ‘teacher’ by some muxhes.
Felina Santiago is a social activist and also a hairdresser with her own salon in Juchitán, a social hub of the town. She is respected and loved by the local community as someone hardworking with integrity and is something of a local celebrity.
Since her mother passed away Felina takes care of her father, and some of her nieces and nephews. Being the family carer is the traditional muxhe role in Zapotec culture.
In her activist work Felina travels internationally promoting sexual diversity and she is a spokesperson from the muxhes at a local level. She has also been very active in the campaign against AIDS over the years – promoting AIDS awareness and education.
